Maryland is facing a severe reading crisis that too few people acknowledge: more than half of students across every county and demographic group aren’t reading on grade level, and even pre-pandemic performance was never good enough. While state leaders have begun taking action, lasting progress requires everyone—families, educators, administrators, businesses, and community partners—to recognize the urgency and work together to build a stronger, statewide reading ecosystem.
