Maryland Matters Op-Ed: It’s time to reframe the conversation about Maryland’s literacy policy

We are  excited to share this op-ed published in Maryland Matters that challenges the recent focus on just one aspect of our state’s literacy policy. While the aspect of retention is important, it’s essential that we draw attention to the comprehensive, holistic approach that the policy embodies. From screenings and assessments to professional development and coaching to improvements in parent engagement, MSDE’s draft policy is designed to ensure that Maryland students are equipped with the foundational literacy skills they need to succeed in school.

At Maryland READS, we believe in the power of a well-rounded literacy strategy and a strong system of support. Let’s ensure that the conversation reflects the full scope of the state’s efforts to provide every child in Maryland with the resources and support they need to thrive.
